what i've been working on lately
These are the projects that have been keeping me busy when i haven't been either working or studying. I enjoy keeping my brain busy with various types of activities. Both NaNoWrimo and Rails Rumble are fun because the push you to the extreme for (relatively) short periods of time, and it's fun to see what you come out with at the end! Rails Rumble '09

Dave and I are participating in the Rails Rumble competition again this year. Our app is going to focus on tools you can use for writing haiku. We are going to start with some basic syllable counting and then, if there's time, we will add in some functionality for antonym and synonym lookups.
[update:] The Rumble is over. We managed to fare not too badly considering that we were hit by Hurricane Bill and lost power for approximately 3 hours heading into the last few hours of the competition. The UPSes kept us alive for a little while, but we did have about 2 hours where we were dead in the water. We didn't make it past the first round of judging, but we did get some nice comments from the judges.eWizard - an iPhone App

I'm happy to announce the release my second iPhone App in Apple's iTunes Store. eWizard is my version of a game that I used to have (and love!) when I was but a youngster. Before there were handheld games that could do everything there were so-called handheld games that used LEDs to provide user feedback and lowly mono-speakers that provided bips and boops for sound effects. What better way to pay homage to such games than on the latest and greatest handheld platform – the iPhone!NaNoWriMo

What is NaNoWriMo? National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.
That being said, I have decided to throw myself into the lion's den and see what I can come up with. I am not sure that I will have time to complete a novel because of the nature of my school work, but I look at this as an opportunity and an adventure. It will certainly be a learning experience!
[update:] Phew! I made it! I finished my 'novel' - if you can call it that... I'm more inclined to call it a strange-piece-of-weirdness. Honestly, one has to wonder where things in your brain originate. This is one piece of writing that will never see the light of day again. That being said, I'm looking forward to doing it all again next year. Woo!LottoPik - an iPhone App

After much hoop-jumping, I've finally released my first iPhone App in Apple's iTunes Store. This small app is a lottery number picker. Who would have thought that it would take so much effort to get everything in place... this included sending paperwork to Apple to authorize them to collect tax on my behalf, and I also had to register with the IRS!
[update:] While it's not the most spectacular app in the app store, it maintains a constant rate of sales; even after one year it still sells several units a week.
